The seventh Moharram procession in Gilgit turned into a beautiful reminder of the region's historical harmony which has been shattered during the past four decades.
(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A large number of Sunni youth and elders from Yadgar Mohalla, under the leadership of Masajid Board members including Raja Nisar Wali, joined the traditional 7th Moharram mourning procession organized by Shia organizations today, in a show of solidarity and unity.

The 7th Moharram procession started in the Nagaral area and after passing through Qizilbash Mohalla and Khomar culminated at Nagaral Imambargah.
Stressed and grieved people of the city who have been through worst violence during the year broke into tears after witnessing the symbolic display of unity, which is also a reminder of the peaceful and harmonious past, when the region was not fragmented on the grounds of sects.

The people of Gilgit-Baltistan have lived in harmony for centuries despite of being followers of different interpretations of Islam. However, the harmony has been hurt due to targeted killings and revenge killings since 1988, when a village in the vicinity of the city was attacked and burnt.

The local people have appreciated the move by the Masajid Board and hoped that such steps will be continued in the future also, to ensure sustainable peace and progress in the region.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Imam Hussein (as) lovers visited the Holy shrine of Sayyeda Zainab (as) on the 10th of Muharram to revive in her presence the calamity that fell upon her, Imam Hussein, and their household by the army of Yazid.

Mourners from different nationalities chose to confront all the challenges and revive this day with the lady who stood by her brother Imam Hussein throughout the battle, and looked after his family after he and all his companions were killed.

Despite the bad security situation in Sayyeda Zainab region in Damascus due to the armed groups' threats, and under rocket fire, faithful Muslims consoled Sayyeda Zainab and took off in crowds around her shrine to say: "Disgrace how remote" and "Here we are at your service o Hussein".

The Shrine of Sayyeda Zainab, which used to be crowded day and night with pilgrims, was closed after the Syrian crisis for fear of terrorist attacks against it. Graffiti were sprayed a while ago on the walls around the shrine saying: "You'll go along with the [Syria] regime".

Beirut Friday Prayer;

His Eminence, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, delivered the two Friday prayer sermons at the Imamain Al-Hassanain Mosque, Muharram 9th 1434H. - November, 23rd 2012. Several prominent religious scholars, dignitaries and thousands of believers attended the Jumu'a prayer.

Sayyed Ali Fadlullah: "Ashoura: The apex of sacrifice"Following is a summary:

The First Sermon

In the first sermon, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah talked about one of the most prominent lessons of Ashoura; sacrifice, which was represented by the martyrdom of Imam Al-Hussein (a.s.), some of his household members and his companions.

He explained that this martyrdom was not sought to attain any personal gains; but rather, to make reform in the nation of Islam. The Sayyed cited several examples of this sacrifice, including the refusal of his companions to leave him and let him fight alone.

In addition to his family, the companions of Al-Hussein also made the greatest sacrifice; they gave up their own lives for his sake. The Sayyed explained that those people were not marginal. They were prominent figures in the society and wealthy, but they gave up everything and went to fight and become martyrs in the course of enjoining right and forbidding evil.

Based on this, the Sayyed explained that the true meaning of sacrifice is not to give what you do not actually need; it is to give from the basic essentials you need in life, including your time, money, health and even yourself.

The Sayyed then called for practicing sacrifice in our contemporary life and for educating people on the value of sacrifice.

The Second Sermon

In the second sermon, Sayyed Ali Fadlullah, began by saluting the victory achieved by Gaza. He explained that this victory was not spontaneous; but rather, the outcome of much consistent efforts, whether by the militants themselves or those who helped them by providing them with money and arms.

The Sayyed added that we ought to preserve this victory by unifying the Palestinian front and strengthening the Palestinian national unity and the Arab and Muslim solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The Sayyed also talked about the bleeding wound in Syria. He asserted that there are several regional and international axes that wish to prolong and intensify the conflict in Syria, and called for a peaceful solution that would prevent further bloodshed.

As for Lebanon, the Sayyed said that on the occasion of the Independence Day, we have to be aware that we are living in a difficult stage in the region with dangerous repercussions on the country. Therefore, we need to engage in a dialogue to circumvent any plot that would exploit this tense situation and to lay the foundation for a peaceful future…

Black flag processions to mark Ashura on Sunday

Bella Jaisinghani TNN

Mumbai: Black flags will overshadow certain parts of the city on Sunday. Lakhs of Shia Muslims are set to observe Ashura, the tenth day of Moharram, with 'taziya' processions and bouts of self-flagellation.
From Bhendi Bazar to Byculla, Bandra to Yari Road, Muslims are preparing for the closing 'matam' (mourning session). Women participate in prayer gatherings, albeit in separate enclosures. Loudspeakers and drumbeats continue well into the night. "We seek police permission and are not interrupted by anti-noise activists," says an organizer.
Men, women and children kept prayer vigil through the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. "We observe 'faaqa', that is we eat nothing until 4pm on Ashura day, the moment that marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his clan of 72 followers in the Battle of Karbala,"
said Yari Road resident Shaheen Zaidi who will visit her parents' home in Bhendi Bazar to join the congregation. Her husband, scholar Javed Ali Zaidi, praises local non-Muslims for not only co-operating with the mourners but even joining them in 'matam'.
Indeed Bhendi Bazar is at the heart of the commemoration. Three to four lakh people melt into one big 'juloos' (procession) that wends its way to the Rehmatabad graveyard at Mazgaon. "Elsewhere, taziyas are buried, but for
lack of space in Mumbai we dismantle them or fold them up," says 'majlis' anchor Kausar Zaidi.
Cleric Maulana Mirza Mohammed Athar from Lucknow has been officiating at Moghul Masjid in Bhendi Bazar since a record 55 years. "Ashura instructs believers to revolt against injustice. You cannot cheat or massacre innocent people and expect to enter heaven where pleasures await you," said the maulana whose Moharram sermons are telecast worldwide. Smaller gatherings are held across housing colonies. Opposite Andheri Sports Complex, the residents of Cheval Class invited Maulana Noorali Abedi from Junnar for their 10-day event.
"We have put up 'alams' (flags) and a poster narrating the story of Karbala at the society entrance," says property owner Sarfaraz Merchant who will join a 'juloos' in Yari Road.

It Was A Secret Noose

Pak Informed on Execution Eve Even Sonia Gandhi was not told, claims home minister

AMAN SHARMA & ROHIT CHANDAVARKAR
NEW DELHI | MUMBAI

Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has said that Mohammad Ajmal Kasab was executed in such secrecy that even Congress president Sonia Gandhi was not informed. The Lashkar-e-Taiba militant from Pakistan was hanged to death within 64 days of his mercy petition, rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee on November 5. The Centre and the Maharashtra government decided to keep the fast-paced events, codenamed Operation X, a closely-guarded secret. "Only four-five officials were in the know of the operation," Shinde said. A person privy to the news said that details of the operation were known only to the prime minister, foreign minister Salman Khurshid, home secretary RK Singh, foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai and IB chief Nehchal Sandhu.
The Pakistan government was informed on the eve of the execution, since Kasab had desired that his mother, Noorie Lai, living in a village in Faridkot, Pakistan, be intimated. Singh wrote to Mathai on November 14, asking for such an intimation to be sent. The Pakistan foreign ministry refused to accept the official letter sent on Tuesday, after which the letter was faxed. The intimation was also sent by courier to Kasab's address, to fulfil a condition in the jail manual that the next-of-kin be informed before an execution.
"Pakistan did not demand Kasab's body, so it was buried inside the Pune jail compound," Shinde
said, adding that Kasab also did not express any last wish before being hanged. A senior official, who did not want to be named, said the government expected diplomatic trouble from Pakistan, pressure from international organisations such as Amnesty and media-frenzy at home if the execution date was made public. Therefore, once President Pranab Mukherjee sent a five-line order to the home ministry on November 5, rejecting Kasab's mercy petition within 20 days of receiving his mercy plea, the home secretary and the Intelligence Bureau chief proposed that the execution be kept a secret. Shinde signed on the file on November 8 and Maharashtra government was informed to share the information on a need-toknow basis with select officials. Pakistan interior minister Rehman Malik was asked to cancel his visit to India on November 22-23 due to the hanging. The Maharashtra government quietly secured a death warrant from a court on November 11, which fixed the execution at 7:30 am, on November 21, in Pune's Yerwada Jail. Kasab was informed of his execution on November 12.
Maharashtra home minister RR Patil said in Mumbai, "Kasab was taken to Pune in an ordinary vehicle on November 19. Jail authorities in Pune were told that Kasab was being brought to Pune jail for some days. The top jail officer was informed just two days in advance that preparation for hanging had to be undertaken inside the jail, and a grave had to be prepared in the jail premises itself." The entire operation, beginning with Kasab's last journey to his burial was video-recorded.
